"Kids Like Us is a non-profit organization dedicated to the literacy learning of children in city schools. We do research, professional development, and advocacy to promote culturally relevant instruction and to ensure that children have access to books in which they can see themselves, their families, and their communities represented and valued when learning to read and write."

Jane Fleming

Jane Fleming is a reading specialist with more than 20 years' experience working in urban public schools in Chicago, St. Louis, and Washington, DC. She is co-founder of KIDS LIKE US, a literacy non-profit that focuses on research, professional development, and advocacy around teaching with culturally relevant texts. She is co-author of the book, More Mirrors in the Classroom: Using Urban Children's Literature to Increase Literacy.

Marella Croom

Marella Croom is an elementary school teacher and literacy advocate with 15 years' experience teaching in public schools in North Carolina and Illinois. She currently teaches second grade in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's west side.

Sandy Ruvalcaba Carrillo

Sandy Ruvalcaba Carrillois a resource teacher for English learners in a school on the southwest side of Chicago who has worked with children in preK through 6th grade for the past seventeen years. She is co-author of the book, More Mirrors in the Classroom: Using Urban Children's Literature to Increase Literacy.
